Physical Features of Ancient Rome One of the most famous physical features in Rome is the Tiber River. The Apennines mountain range runs through Rome and most of Italy, and supplies this area with much water. Rome is sometimes called “The City of Seven Hills” because 7 main hills are located in this region. Rome is near the Mediterranean Sea, which played a huge part in warfare, and especially trade. Roman summers are warm to mild, and the winters are cold. Between October and January is when the winter season takes place, and most of the rainfall occurs.
